July 20, 2011  |  Exhibit, News

On July 14th the new exhibition “Genoa Genoa Tomorrow Today” has opened.
The exhibition shows the city’s new Urban Plan developed by the Urban Lab of Genoa, coordinated by Ricky Burdett.
The venue of the event is the Loggia di Banchi, an important and beautiful building in the city, which reopen after years in the role of new Urban Center in Genoa.

Introduction to the exhibit by Ricky Burdett:

This exhibition marks an important turning point for the city of Genova.
It illustrates the journey that this ancient city is taking to respond to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century: globalization, climate change, migration, economic and social change.
The new “Piano Urbanistico Comunale” (PUC) establishes a vision of how Genova can evolve in a smart and sustanaible way over the next decade, firmly grounded in its economic, social and cultural realities.
By opening the 16th century Loggia di Banchi at the heart of Genova to the public – Italy’s first stock exchange – the exhibition re-establishes a dialogue with its citizens and its visitors about its present and its future.

Introduction to the Urban Plan by Marta Vincenzi, Genova’s Mayor:

To create a new urban plan and is an exciting challenge of unusual complexity.
It is, in fact, to manage simultaneously the irreversible weight of history, the inertia of past and present city and an ambitious but not impossible future vision of the city, flexible but anchored to the values of coexistence easily communicable, recognizable in its uniqueness but able to continuously evolve.
The effort we have made it appears to contain this complexity without giving up any ambition, despite it can be improved during the public debate.
Renzo Piano (drawings 1 and 2) guided us in our work at Urban Lab teaching us to looking at Genoa through upgrading the seafront, the precious line of the hills, the quality of architecture, the ability to grow without consuming the soil in the wrong way, the treasure of sustainability that the sun and the wind give us.
The town planner Richard Burdett (Fig. 3) helped us to compare the issues of planning with other cities in the world who have proved capable of good changes and adaptations. With him we have developed our Key Diagram, that represents our idea of the city in the coming decades.
