New Stories New Design

September 1, 2004  |  Research

The project entitled “New Stories, New Design” was presented for the first time during the 2002 Salone del Mobile in Milan and subsequently exhibited at The 6th Biennale of Architecture in Shanghai, The 9th Biennale of Architecture of Venice, at The Design Department of the Politecnic University of Milano (2002), Domus Academy in Milan (2002) and at The Design and Art Department of the IUAV in Venice (2002).
The project proposes opportunities of “social” development by inventing new employment initiatives.
These ideas represent a range of possibilities that work towards increasing the value of occupations that are marginal or destined to be lost, or create opportunities of leisure time activities that generate business.
Six different hypothetical projects were developed that relate to new networks in public spaces, that together established a kind of “manifesto” on the possibilities of the use of design tools to interpret the potential of social relations within the city, keeping in mind the goal of building alternative and innovative microeconomies.

MANIFESTO

IN PURSUIT OF VITALITY AND NEW MARKETS
In a world where industry focuses almost exclusively on familiar, standardizing mechanisms and approaches, producing ideas has become increasingly diffi cult. This leads to the desire to explore new spheres in which to inject creative energy.

REALITY OFFERS INFINITE STIMULI AND OPPORTUNITY FOR DESIGN
If we observe the things around us we notice some that don’t work, some that no longer exist, and we realize that many things have yet to be invented, reinvented or simply combined in a new way. Everyday life can be seen as a complex of fragments, of stories to be salvaged and reworked, a universe composed more of relations than of objects. The material of inspiration for many projects is all around us, and designers, with their creative force, can become the catalysts.

NEW STORIES NEW DESIGN
New Stories New Design is an attempt to look at the design universe using different keys of interpretation. It’s an invitation to invent stories capable of giving a context to products and services.
Thus the designer becomes explorer and collector, reader and interpreter, critic and narrator.
Starting with the dual analysis of activities and relations, design generates new business opportunities in which quality and dignity are the reference values. In this sense the designer’s work becomes a generous, regenerating process.
